WakeEd Nationally Recognized for Leadership in STEM Mentoring Movement

\"US2020In addition to creating exciting and innovative learning experiences for students in Wake County, WakeEd Partnership’s STEMpact programs are being recognized as unique, inspiring, and effective educational practices on a national stage. This summer, WakeEd President Steve Parrott visited Washington D.C. to receive a US2020 STEM Mentoring Award for Excellence in Public-Private Partnerships. WakeEd Partnership was one of two finalists honored for their collaborative programs at the US2020 STEM Mentoring Symposium.

These awards were \”designed to highlight innovative collaborations in STEM mentoring,\” particularly those with the ability to scale. More than 150 organizations were considered.

Other programs recognized in the presentation included Genentech, CH2M, and the Indiana University School of Informatics at IUPUI.

“The award is really a recognition of the collective investment by our business, organization, and post-secondary community, who believe that investments of time and talent in our schools are essential for developing our state’s future STEM workforce,” said Teresa Pierrie. “These programs \’win\’ for teachers and students as they bring relevance to daily academic experiences in our schools.\”

Nick Hutchinson, Executive Director of US2020, also addressed the significance of these achievements, commenting that “quality, skills-based mentorship is uniquely positioned to address the barriers to STEM access and achievement and has been shown to provide academic and emotional benefits for students, particularly at-risk youth.”
